YEEZY 700 V1 Waverunner
2016-2017 - B75571 - $300ReleasedBackground: Designed by Steven Smith, Ye, Dingyun Zhang, Brian Foresta; prototyping/redesigning by Maral Kalinian & Nichan Srour, @heybz; 2D/3D work by @mtitova3 & @abstrktn on Instagram; upper patterns and material chosen by Sa'rah Melinda Sabino; and engineering by Jeffrey Alan Henderson.
The design process of the YEEZY 700 V1 started with Steven Smith & Ye revisiting old sketches of Steven’s; one of them had a sole with circular orbs on it, which is now signature to the 700s. Then, for 48 hours straight, Steven Smith, Ye, and Dingyun Zhang exchanged sketches, photoshops, and feedback back and forth to eventually reach the 700 V1.
Months after the initial design process, Adidas was not reaching the vision Ye wanted for the 700 due to their standards of building sneakers, making the 700 too bulbous, causing it to arrive near the deadline of being scrapped.
However, Ye then had Maral Kalinian and her team of Armenian pattern makers and stitchers properly reshape the 700 in 10 days, lowering the toe spring, removing the back flair, counter-straightening, vamp angled to a point, and applying slight nuances according to Ye’s vision. With a 3D printer, Maral recreated the bottom more aligned with what Ye was focusing on: the vibe, the overall triangular profile shape, all the way from pattern trials to the final approved prototype.
The Waverunner colorway was the first 700 V1 colorway to release, and it went up for preorder on Yeezy Supply, shipping in 3 months. Initially, it received lots of criticism but is now credited with starting the “dad shoe” trend in fashion and is now one of the most iconic Yeezys and shoes ever. Unlike future 700 releases, the tongue was not strapped to the sides. Only a handful of 700s in the future would release with this OG design.
